I’m a pretty big fan of dangerous sports, crazy stunts, jumping off roofs, white water rafting, mountain climbing, skydiving, biking, fighting, the general stuff that always begins and ends with the warning: “Do not try this at home!” But then that’s exactly what I (maybe you too) end up doing.
So when did Christianity become happy-go-lucky?
“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me, but those who stand firm to the end will be saved.” Matthew 10:21-22
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you” 1 Peter 4:12
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is true worship.” Romans 12:1
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
Throughout history true followers of Jesus have been persecuted, hated and killed. Following Christ is not a free ticket to heaven. Following Christ is FOLLOWING CHRIST, living in obedience, faith and love as He did. This will come with affliction and a lot of resistance. But the reward is absolutely amazing! You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will do amazing things and you will one day live in harmony with God and his people.
If you want to try and make everyone happy, if you want to be loved by everyone, if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, if you don’t want to fight for love, if you don’t want to be refined through fire but are happy and content with your life...then; DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
