Imagine if you will, the living out of this idea and the impact it would have on your family, friends, neighborhood, city and nation.
"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." (Romans 12:10). Some translations say "outdo one another in showing honor." Or "Give each other more honor than you want for yourselves."
Philippians 2:3 says, "Don’t be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves."
That sounds like a loosing situation in a world where we are all trying to outdo one another. It really sounds counter productive! But, it's my finding that these are actually some of the most practical portions of scripture we can live by and you can test it out by looking around you.
Who is doing better: the people fighting to be on top and pushing each other down, or the people partnering up, giving each other a hand and lifting each other up?
I think this is not only true spiritually, but in every facet of life including family, education, business and governance.
The obvious objection here might be: what if I invest so much time and effort into my staff/friends/community and they just leave or betray me? To that I say, so what! Let them go. You did your part and as the saying goes "a rising tide lifts all boats". You will always attract more people with this kind of attitude than you could risk loosing and the world will be better off for it.
What do you say? Is this a crazy idea?
